Monasteries, volcanoes and a lake.
An unhurried loop through a small mountain country: forested Dilijan, Sevan at 1,900 m, the Selim pass with its fourteenth-century caravanserai, the Vorotan canyon and Tatev monastery. Mostly tarmac, light traffic and distances that leave time to stop at every monastery. A fine first foreign motorcycle tour.

Yerevan and the bikes
Pick-up at Zvartnots, a hotel near Republic Square, bike set-up. The Cascade in the evening, with a view of Ararat if the weather allows.
Overnight: Hotel in Yerevan - DAY 2 · 180 km, tarmac
The forests of Dilijan and Haghartsin
North past the lake to Dilijan at 1,250 m. Haghartsin and Goshavank monasteries in the beech forests, and the old Sharambeyan street.
Overnight: Guesthouse in Dilijan - DAY 3 · 170 km, lakeside tarmac
Around Sevan
Sevanavank on its peninsula, then along the eastern shore via Hayravank and the khachkar field of Noratus. Night on the southern shore.

The Selim pass and Jermuk
Switchbacks up the Selim pass, 2,410 m, the caravanserai of 1332 and down into Vayots Dzor. Via Yeghegnadzor to the spa town of Jermuk at 2,100 m and its waterfall.

The Vorotan canyon and Tatev
Via Sisian and the Zorats Karer standing stones to the Vorotan canyon. Down the hairpins to the Devil’s Bridge, up to Tatev, and the cableway across the gorge.

Noravank and the wine valley
Back north via Goris, then into the red Amaghu canyon to Noravank monastery. Night in Yeghegnadzor, dinner at a winery in Areni.

Khor Virap and the return
Khor Virap monastery against Ararat, the pagan temple of Garni and the basalt columns of the Garni gorge. Bikes returned in Yerevan.

Category A licence, two or more years of riding; mountain switchback experience is helpful. Ivan holds an introductory session on kit and the quirks of Armenian roads.
