Two great roads of the Carpathians.
The Transfăgărășan climbs to Bâlea Lake at 2,042 m, the Transalpina goes higher still over the Urdele pass at 2,145 m, and both are open only in summer. Between them lies Transylvania with its Saxon towns and fortified churches. A week out of Sibiu at a calm pace, a good blend of mountain roads and history for a first long-distance motorcycle trip.

- DAY 1 · 50 km, getting to know the bikes
Sibiu, start in a Saxon town
We meet in Sibiu, collect the bikes and spend the evening in the Great Square and by the Bridge of Lies. A short ride to Sibiel and its glass icon museum, about 50 km.

Transfăgărășan, the northern face
Along the DN1 to Cârțișoara and up the DN7C: 27 km of switchbacks to Bâlea Lake at 2,042 m, then the 884 m tunnel and the descent past the Vidraru reservoir to Curtea de Argeș. A stop at Poenari fortress on the way. About 190 km.

Câmpulung, Bran and Brașov
Via Câmpulung and the Giuvala pass at 1,240 m to Rucăr and Bran, with the castle in the afternoon. Evening in Brașov: the Black Church and Strada Sforii. About 170 km.

Saxon villages and Sighișoara
The fortified church at Prejmer, then back roads through Rupea and Viscri, a village with a 12th-century fortified church, to Sighișoara. About 180 km of rolling roads with little traffic.

Biertan, Sebeș and up the Transalpina
Via Biertan and Mediaș to Sebeș, then south on the DN67C: the Sebeș valley, Lake Oașa, the plateau above 1,800 m and the Rânca resort at 1,600 m. About 280 km.

Urdele and the Olt valley
In the morning up to the Urdele pass at 2,145 m, the highest point on any Romanian road, and back north. Down to Novaci, then via Horezu and Râmnicu Vâlcea through the Olt gorge back to Sibiu. About 290 km.

Arrive ready for the route.
A category A or A2 licence and at least 5,000 km of riding. Ivan explains beforehand how to handle Romanian traffic and horse carts on the verges, with a short session on wet tarmac technique.
