How to choose your first trail running camp

A trail camp combines several days on natural terrain with practice and route discovery. Choose it by the structure of the training day as well as the destination.

Camp, running tour or race trip

A coaching camp includes technique sessions and feedback on climbing, descending and pole use. A running tour focuses on a sequence of routes; a race trip follows the event schedule.

For your first mountain experience, ask how much teaching is included and whether a shorter route is possible. These formats can overlap, but they serve different goals.

Compare time and terrain, not just distance

Ten kilometres on a flat road and ten on rocky mountain trails mean different efforts. Ask about time on feet, elevation gain, surfaces and the longest day. Check whether the group stays together or splits by pace.

The Chamonix Trail Camp itinerary, for example, describes four days and 8–18 km on active days. Discuss that range against your current training before choosing the trip.

  • Describe your weekly running and usual long session.
  • Explain your experience with rocks, roots and long descents.
  • Ask which sessions are essential and which can be shortened.

Prepare before you travel

Share recent training and your goal: a first trail, better technique or a specific race. Pre-camp coaching and on-site instruction are separate services, so check what the price includes.

Request the final equipment list. Shoes, carrying capacity, weather protection and required kit depend on the route. Test new equipment during familiar training before departure.

Compare the complete budget

Allow for travel to the meeting point, meals not included, lifts and personal equipment. Each MONT itinerary lists included and excluded expenses.

Confirm the program, effort, meeting point and dates before booking travel. For race trips, check entry directly with the event organiser: joining a journey does not automatically provide a race entry.

Discuss your plan

Share your experience, preferred dates and expectations. We will use them to discuss the route and preparation.
