THE JOURNEY IN DETAIL

Lakes and passes of the Western Caucasus.

Arkhyz is a valley at 1,450 m in Karachay-Cherkessia, from which trails climb to the Sofia glaciers, waterfalls and lakes at 2,800 m. In June the passes still hold snow and the rivers run full, while the Romantik resort lifts carry you to 2,500 m without walking. A camp for runners who want genuine mountain terrain and altitude without complicated logistics.

  • The Sofia Lakes (2,830 m) via the Irkiz pass
  • The Sofia waterfalls beneath Mount Sofia (3,637 m)
  • The Abishira-Akhuba ridge from the Romantik lift
  • A swim in Semitsvetnoye lake
