THE JOURNEY IN DETAIL

A volcano and laurel trails in winter.

In winter you can run in a T-shirt on Tenerife’s coast and be at 3,000 m in the Las Cañadas del Teide caldera the same day. The north holds the damp laurel forests of Anaga with narrow ridge trails; up high it is dry lava and thin air. A camp for anyone who wants to keep mountain form through winter and try running at moderate altitude.

  • The Teide caldera: running at 2,000–2,300 m across lava fields
  • The climb of Montaña Blanca to the Altavista refuge at 3,260 m
  • Anaga ridges from Cruz del Carmen down to Taganana
  • The Masca gorge down to the ocean
